Hello blog!

Today's post is something magical.

Upon meeting, Destiny and I knew that a photography collaboration between the two of us was a must. After a few conversations we both knew that we wanted to create a shoot that created an otherworldly fantasy.  We knew that we wanted out photos so ooze ethereal beauty and harmonious femininity. We instantly thought of fairies.
Fairies are one of the most romanticized characters in English fantasies. A fairy usually cannot be classified as one creature but is often times used as a general term to describe an ethereal being or presence. Fairies appear and disappear at their own discretion, populate Enchanted Forests and ponds, and often cause mischief for those who cross their paths. We wanted to play with this narrative and turn it into something new. Our final decision, to team up with each other and shoot this concept together.
However, teaming up with another photographer, bears itself to a lot of head-butting. Although passive in our nature, Destiny and I did not agree on everything and our methods of shooting are highly contrasting.

When I photograph a scene, I'm recreating an image I've only seen in my head. I could shoot a pristine collection of photos in 30 minutes because I already know what I'm looking for. Thus, my photography style prompts a naturalistic approach. The muted tones of spring shadows, and the disparity of soft flowers against the striking blue sky is what drives my photographic inspiration. After all, I became a photographer because I'm a visual person. I can't explain my thoughts and feelings well, but I can show them. But this means I have to go above and beyond to make sure my thoughts are translated correctly. Due to my imaginative element, every model and participant gets a copy of my detailed mood board compiled of posing, styling, and mood setting ideas. Allowing everyone to know what to expect as soon as I pull out my camera is relaxing and reassuring. Spontaneity is reserved for candid and natural moments captured through my shutter, not in external circumstances. I am a control freak, to say the least.

But from what I've learned, Destiny's style is... the exact opposite.

When Destiny is behind the camera, it's a whole new method. Destiny loves spontaneity. What takes me 30 minutes to shoot would most likely take Destiny 45 minutes to an hour. She prefers to "feel out" the shoot, meaning that she is more willing to experiment during the shoot and stray away from the original concept mid-shoot. She would even be wiling to drive around town, jumping from one random field to the next rather than having a set location. Her care-free attitude was almost frighting to me. She doesn't follow a fixed game-plan, but creates her own.

Apparently, a control-freak + an easy-goer is the recipe for success.
The amazing thing about working with another photographer is that you get to use a "second set of eyes". The clique, opposites attract would prove to be true here.

*Thank you Tommy for being the videographer & my driving buddy

Our model search was an interesting journey but our hearts rested in these three lovely ladies. Dierra, Mattie (Shaxa), and Kaelin are otherworldly. Their unique features and pure souls were the stars of this shoot. I couldn't imagine how our shoot would have turned out if these girls weren't our fairies for the day. Also, thank you Jaleea for being the makeup artist on this excursion. She really captured the unearthly beauty of these girls.

Months of planning, contrasting ideas, dropped FaceTime calls, last minute flops, and five Pinterest boards later, we finally created this magical shoot.
2 photographers. 3 models. 1 videographer. 1 makeup artist. We were super ambitious. But high ambitions yield better results.

On the left you will see my images and on the right you will see Destiny's images. This collaboration taught me a lot about the art of photography. The saying "the beauty is in the eye of the beholder" really rang true during this shoot.
