When I first started photography, Instagram wasn’t even a thing, I know, shocking.
Before Instagram, I used Flickr and Facebook to find inspirational photographers. I still go back to those sites every now and then just to look back at who I was following.
It holds a kind of like a time capsule effect in a sense that I can go back and see the type of work that inspired me back in 2014/2015.
One photographer, in particular, ended up having a huge impact on my work. That photographer is Julia Trotti. [@juliatrotti]
I remember finding Julia's work at a time when I didn’t know what type of photos I wanted to take. I had just recently started taking photos but I was tired of just clicking the shutter without a purpose. I wanted to take beautiful and meaningful images but at the time, I didn't know what that looked like.
So, today’s shoot and behind the scenes video is my take at shooting Julia’s signature style!
I always loved looking at Julia’s photos because she was able to capture a certain level of genuine happiness that I couldn't get enough of. Her sharp and cheerful images actually inspired me to shoot portraits. I can definitely see this influence in my early works. I would go out with my friends and just tell them to spin and laugh and just have fun!
As I moved from portraits to fashion my heart is still drawn to those real, smiley, in between moments. My love for candids is the reason why I shoot my portraits and fashion images the way I do. During shoots I will often tell my subject to "do whatever feels natural" and it's not because I ran out of posing ideas. I use line because I want to be able to capture that level of authenticity I see in Julia's work and you can't always get that when you're directing your subject. Some of my favorite images come from these candid scenarios.
