Hello blog,

*cue Taylor Swift's RED album*

Surprisingly enough, Tay Tay's RED era was not the inspiration for this shoot.

I truly loved A L L of the final images from this shoot. Picking just a handful to feature in the behind the scenes video was definitely a challenge, especially because my intention was for this set was to resemble a magazine spread.

Enough chit-chat, let's dissect this shoot.

CONCEPT
If you haven't noticed by now, this shoot is not my usual style. I have been really inspired by the variety of images present on Instagram. The images are not only conceptually sound but they are also emotionally complete. I have always been drawn to images that make me feel something. Rather it is an intentional feeling or just one that occurs naturally, I will always define the quality of the photo based on how it makes me feel. Sadly, I have always felt that my own images lack this factor. Every once and a while I will get that one shot that makes me feel something deep down in my bones. It shakes my core. And with this shoot, I really wanted to play with this idea of overpowering emotions. You can not ignore the color red. Not only is it worked into advertisements and branding everywhere, it also means something different to everyone. The color red is one of passion and aggression and it can also be used to represent desire and love. With all these emotions tied into the color, I knew that this was the color to shoot.

STYLING
After a quick critique from a fellow photographer (you know who you are), I was made aware of my "shooting pattern". I tend to style shoots based on my everyday influences, also called trends. Now there is nothing wrong with following fashion trends, but just like any other trend, they are fleeting and are only looking for their 5 minutes of fame. As a fashion photographer, my job is to create an image that is timeless and fashion trends are pretty much the opposite of that. This shoot isn't completely exempt from the presence of current fashion trends, but I believe the story outgrow and overpower these trends.

EXECUTION
I mean do I need to explain how fun this shoot was? Like just look at the video. Shoutout to Virginia for making this shoot a breeze.

EDITING
I can't help but snicker when thinking about the editing of this shoot. When I first started photography remember clearly being told to avoid the color red when photographing because red is often the dominant color in skin tones, thus styling a subject in this color can result in less than desirable skin colors. Yeaaah I don't know who told me this but, I am glad I have finally earned that rule from my mind. Although stressful, matching the brightness and saturation of reds is exhausting, I am in love with these final edits.

I can't tell if it's the quirkiness of the facial expressions or the solidarity of this powerful hue, but when I look at these images, I feel something. And I hope you feel something too.
