Hello blog!

This was my last shoot of 2017 and let me tell you, I was very ambitious on this one. Have I ever used a photo backdrop before this shoot? NOPE. Have I ever set-up a photo backdrop outside on a windy day? NOPE. Was I extremely determined to finish out 2017 with a BANG? YUP.

Today's shoot features Arlette Tejada (@arlette.tejada) of 3 Black Bird Management (@3blackbirdmanagement) with makeup by Ashlyn Noto (@ashlyn.notomua).

Sometimes I create photo ideas that make sense. And those ideas put me at ease because I know that I can produce great photos with little to no risk. But other times, my photo ideas are a little more back-breaking. A windy parking deck plus a flimsy backdrop stand is probably not the most relaxing photo scenario. Setting up cloth backdrop with no sandbags or support and fighting semi-strong winds all while trying to take photos was not easy. But capturing great photos should never be easy.

I can't really give you a true breakdown of the inspiration or vision for this shoot. I knew that I wanted to play with textures and colors. With one neutral tones backdrop and one cool-toned, I knew the styling warranted something other than my faithful all-black styling. And when Artlette walked onto the set wearing the same colored sweater as the one I pulled for her, I knew this shoot was going to work. Blue is often associated with depth and stability, something to compliment the color beige which is neutral, calm, and relaxing. While on the other hand, pink is a color of approachability and inner peace. I wanted to play with the idea of color harmony, making sure each outfit complemented the backdrop perfectly.

All of the overly analytical stuff aside, I just knew that I wanted to create something with feeling. I wanted something different. Something to make me stop and think about every little adjustment. Something to make me fight for the images I wanted. There is no need to stay in your comfort zone when there is a world waiting for you to break out.
