Mood boards are an essential part of every shoot.

At the heart of every concept, there is a single photo. It’s a single frame that encapsulates a bundle of emotions and a multitude of meanings. And often times this is an image that I have only imagined in my mind.

Thus, creating mood boards of shoot concepts for clients and models is the key to my photography. A mood board can be as simple as a photo collage or as complex as a brochure. Either way, they are as essential as your camera when it comes to creating a successful shoot. Not only do mood boards allow you to communicate your idea to your team but they also are a great way to organize and plan shoots.

HOW I CREATE A MOOD BOARD
a step by step process

STEP 1: The easy part! Think of a shoot concept/idea that you want to create.
STEP 2: Research! Go on Pinterest or Instagram and find images that fit into your idea. Find images for the overall mood, wardrobe styling, and makeup. Also, think about 3-4 adjectives that describe the overall mood of your shoot.
STEP 3: Piece together the images you found into their appropriate group. Do this by creating a college either in Photoshop or by using a collage app on your phone.
STEP 4: Upload your college(s) and adjectives into a google doc, a PDF, a webpage, or really anything! Find what works best for you!
STEP 5: VOILA! C'EST FINI.

I have added some screenshots of some of my mood boards into this post and as you can see, mood boards vary from shoot to shoot. Which means that these steps are super easy and very customizable. Can't find images for a wardrobe collage? Turn it into words. Can't think of adjectives? Nix them and just add more images! The great thing about mood boards is that they are a representation of your idea. You have the ability to make them as simple or as complex as your imagination allows.
