Hello blog!
Sometimes you don't always have a Ford model to pose for you. Sometimes you want to capture a fun memory with friends. Or maybe inspiration strikes you and you just want to shoot. I have had all three of the things happen to me and for years I have struggled with trying to figure out the best way to pose/direct my friends when I ask them to model for me.

When working with models, you don't have to give them any posing direction. 99% of the time they know their angles and poses and just strut their stuff while you click the shutter. However, taking photos of other people (aka your roommate, your friends, your family, and clients) can be quite challenging. They often don't know their angles. They don't know what poses to do. And, for the love of God, they don't know what to do with their hands!! So, I try my best to promise two things to whoever I'm shooting.
Promise 1: We will have a fun. We will laugh and have a great time
Promise 2: You will not look awkward or bad in any of your photos. I will try my best to make sure you are as comfortable and as cool as a cucumber in all of your photos.
Most people are not comfortable having their picture taken. It's awkward and intimating to many. As a lifestyle photographer, I deal with this at just about every client session. I'm not going to lie, having a client that won't loosen up during a session is my worst nightmare.
So, Here's 5 tips on how to pose your friends or clients (who aren't models) to get more out of your photos.
Tip 1: Play some music! Find out their favorite band or singer and blast it! This
Tip 2: Use a prop! Give your subject a prop. This will answer the “What do I do with my hands?” question and add a creative element to the photo.
Tip 3: Wardrobe! As a fashion photographer this is one of the first things I organize when planning a shoot. To ensure a special level of confidence advise your subject on styling. Make sure they wear clothes that make them feel comfortable and confident.
Tip 4: Give An Action! I do this for clients, friends, AND models! Ask your subject to perform a specific action such as walking or jumping. This will help you get interesting in-action shots. Bonus points if you act out the actions!!
Tip 5: Say Cheese! Cliche I know, but bear with me. Don’t forget to let your subject smiles! Not every photo has to be serious. Make sure you’re capturing fun and authentic moments as well a fierce ones!
And my friend Arianna got to experience all of this first hand. Here's more about this awesome human being I get to call a friend.
Q: Your current favorite song?
A: At the moment...it's 13 Beaches by Lana del Rey.
Q: Your favorite article of clothing you own
A: My Members Only jacket, it's summer but it's so comfy to lounge in.
Q: Describe your style in 3 words
A: Minimal, street, dad
Q: How did you feel during the shoot?
A: I felt powerful and immense, yet light and supple.
Q: How did you feel after you saw the finished images
A: AMAZING. My jaw dropped on how great they looked and it's like seeing a completely different person.
I really get to see my subjects' personality and aura shine during lifestyle shoots. And using these 5 tips I'm able to do all of that and more! I get to learn new things about them while simultaneously trying to capture this essence in a photo. When you do get your subject to loosen up and see their final images, their joyful reaction is so rewarding. I've had clients tell me that they couldn't believe that was them in the photo or that they didn't know they could look so good!
That, my friends, is why I love being a lifestyle photographer.
Shooting models is great and I always know that I can get as creative as I want with model sessions. But shooting, everyday people, is what I live for.
